The Seshy Charitable Society began operations in 1992 as a community rehabilitation project by AWH, in association with Action Aid India. A charitable society with its headquarters at Malappuram, the activities of Seshy is spread across different areas in the district. Seshy has set up institutes at Parappanangadi, Tirurangadi, Vallikkunnu, Thennala, Peruvalloor, Thenhipalam, Morayoor, Vazhayoor, Cherukavu, Kondotty, Areacode, Melattoor Panchayaths and in Tirur Municipality.
This organization aims to work hard for the educational, moral and economic uplift and rehabilitation of handicapped people, women and children, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and other socially deprived sections. It also strives to work for the identification and diagnosis of various illnesses among children and adults. Its rehabilitation programs have received accolades. With welfare activities for children, Seshy has also set up a dedicated Childline unit providing emergency services to children. The organization also plans to establish community based rehabilitation programs, along with special schools for differentially-abled children, vocational training centers and parent training programs.
Seshy conducted a host of activities during the past years, especially in the fields of awareness generation, special education, capacity buildings, health, and economic empowerment. It also facilitated services and concession to children and adults with various disabilities. Nearly 1500 mothers attended Seshy’s awareness programs on the causes, prevention and management of childhood disabilities to mothers. About 75 students attended another seminar on Adolescent problems at Manjeri. Workshops on women’s working conditions and awareness programs as part of the women’s week were also conducted. 650 people attended Seshy’s health awareness programs conducted in 28 different parts of the district last year. The society also provided physiotherapy services to children with disabilities. The organization also runs 5 special schools and special education centers at different areas of Malappuram.
Seshy runs the activities of Childline at Malappuram. Childline is a 24 hour toll free tele-outreach helpline for children in need of help and protection. Available on the number 1098, it is supported by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Govt. of India with NGOs, State Governments, UNICEF, the Corporate Sector and concerned individuals. The service has been set up to provide assistance to children in distress, particularly street children, neglected and delinquent children facing physical, mental and sexual abuse. It provides emergency assistance to children including medical assistance, shelter, rescue, sponsorship and counseling. Launched on 4th May, 2007, Seshy is the collaborative organization of Childline. Childline Malappuram received 11839 phone calls during the period from 1st April 2008 to 31st March 2009. Among these calls, Childline intervened in 1333 cases.
